We have a drought here as well, but I still have copper to the main 
input, and galvanized to the city service.  We were going to replace 
that when we remodeled 20 years ago, but didn't get around to it.  I 
also have a ground rod, as specified by code.
I do notice frequent dropouts of my cable internet connection in the 
summer, but suspect that is due to expansion of the connectors rather 
than lack of grounding.
