light has two meanings.

light as in sunlight, light bulb. etc.
or light as in opposite of Heavy (he is light as a feather)

Lite came on the scene to mean Compact. as in the computer code is lite.
or Lite as mean not as full featured. SQLite does not have all the 
features and bells and whistles of the original. Features and pieces are 
left out.

or in the case of food products Lite milk has more water added to water 
it down. or the TV dinner if Lite has less Calories of or fat content.
