Hi,

Following up on my own problem a little. I couldn't figure out what was 
causing the DLL load failures, but instead I built a minimal wrapper DLL 
that exposed only the functionality I needed. The wrapper links 
statically to the previously troublesome library.

Initially this exhibited exactly the same behaviour. Once I had limited 
the DLL export list to only those symbols in my wrapper library I no 
longer experienced the crash.

Not an ideal situation but a workable solution for now.
