Huh? You CANNOT use rxvt INSTEAD of bash! bash is a shell; rxvt is a
console, i.e. a CONTAINER in which to run a shell. What you mean is
to run bash WITHIN rxvt, instead of within the native console.

This advice may be ok, if you are using Cygwin, but in general, it is
not so good if you are running a lot of native w32 programs. Your
problem originates in your attempt to use ANSI escape sequences to
control the cursor, and Microsoft's consoles have always been
appallingly bad at supporting that. However, before throwing out
advice such as `just use rxvt', you would be well advised to review
the list archives, for a litany of problems CAUSED by bad
interactions between native programs and the underlying runtime DLL
used by rxvt, when rxvt is interposed into the I/O pipeline.

For non-Cygwin users, (and remember this is NOT a Cygwin mailing
list), `use rxvt' may actually be very bad advice.

Keith.
