***BOGO*** Problem with text on GTKdemo/others

I have cross compiled GTK, Pango, GLib, etc.  for  Directfb.

When I try to run gtkdemo or another gtk-based app, everything launches 
and most of the graphics look OK, but the text is only showing as a 
bunch of boxes and junk.

I'm fairly sure this is a Pango/freetype issue, but I don't know how to 
fix it.  I have spent time going through the FAQ and googling, but am 
not finding much.

Can someone please point me in the right direction?
